A Chakra Goes Missing

June 9, 2008

I had an interesting experience during my creating process for this Chakra design. First I created the meditation pose and then did some research on the appropriate colors to align with the different parts of the body for the chakras. I had the image almost complete and then became involved with other tasks.

My 5:30 a.m. morning routine is to swim for 40 minutes at a local health club. This particular morning, at the end of my swim, as I got out of the pool suddenly I was so dizzy I could hardly stand up and staggered to the locker room. I sat quietly on a bench with my head in my hand praying for this “attack” to go away. I did not want to call attention to myself and figured if I were just quiet for a while I would start to feel better. After a while one of the women I usually see around this same time came in from her swim. I must have looked weird sitting there with my head in my hands because Judith asked if I were alright. I told her I was dizzy. She took a shower, returned to where I was sitting and stood in back of me as she moved her hands slowly over and around my body without touching. Then she made the pronouncement that my chakras were out of alignment and further elaborated that she had studied Reiki.

Reiki is one of the more widely known forms of energy healing. Energy Healing involves direct application of Chi for the purpose of strengthening the clients energy system (aura). Chi is the term used by the Chinese mystics and martial artists for the underlying force the Universe is made of. Mystics in all cultures have talked about the physical universe being made of an underlying form of something, much as modern physics research is now coming to understand the Universe is made of energy which is subject to (or affected by) thought. Just as modern physics says this energy is affected by thought the mystics also say this underlying form is affected by thought, going so far as to claim we create our own reality from our thinking and the thoughts we share between each of us every day.” For more on this click here

When Judith told me that my chakras were out of alignment what astonished me was the fact that I had been working on an image that incorporated all the chakras. Judith had no clue about my work nor did I have any idea that she had studied Reiki and the significance of chakras. I immediately told her what I had been working on with an illustration for the purpose of selling in a T-shirt and how amazed I was at the synchronicity of this event. She told me that my second chakra was what was wrong. She said that she felt that I was sending out a lot of heat in that area. Something was wrong. She didn’t claim to know what.Yoga Chakra Meditation

Judith continued with running her hands around the space next to my body as I sat quietly. I was still not feeling well at all and was grateful that someone was there. Slowly I began to feel better. After a while I drove home as Judith followed me in her car just to make sure got home safely. I went to bed and slept for a while.

But the most amazing thing is what I discovered when I felt well enough to go back to work on my image of the meditation pose with all the colors of the chakras radiating out, By mistake I had left the color orange, the power center, out of the image. I had been so focused on other aspects of the illustration that I didn’t notice this omission even though I knew it belonged there. This discovery blew me away even more and has left me thinking a lot about the power of imagery and the many levels that entails whether creating or viewing.

If anyone has any thoughts about this I would love to know them.

Meanwhile, check out my Chakra T-shirts.

The Vibration of Color

June 9, 2008

We can learn a great deal about how color vibration affects us just by observing and playing around with the different colors. Think about how it makes you feel when you step outside on a bright and sunny day. The gentle blue sky is showering us with calm. Blue helps us feel more positive like a “breath of fresh air” . Blue skies bring a sense of wellness to us. We feel as though “the sky’s the limit” . This color vibration is very healing and opens the body to health and wellness.

On any day when you are feeling like you need a little boost, try wearing red. The vibration of the color red is invigorating. This color will raise your energy level. Think about a time you may have been driving down the street enjoying the beautiful sunny day and in the rear view mirror you see a flaming red fire engine with lights flashing. Your heart begins to race and your blood pressure rises. The vibration of red can invoke a sense of taking action.

About Chakras

June 9, 2008

The chakras are the seven main energy centers in the body. They are located along the spine, starting at the base running upwards to the crown of the head. Each chakra radiates a specific color and energy and relates to specific spiritual, emotional, psychological and body issues. The fifth Chakra – Commuication, Vissudha (purification), is located at the throat. Its color is bright blue and its issues are communication, inspiration, expression, and faith.
The fourth Chakra, – Love, Anahata (not struck), is located at the heart (center of the chest). Its color is green and its issues are love, compassion, acceptance, and trust.

Mercury viewing is at its best this month peaking this week, and in its home sign of Gemini. Remember that in ancient Greek mythology, Mercury is the messenger of the gods, traveling from Olympus to Earth often with messages to humans (sometimes in the form of dreams) and to Hades in his capacity as psychopomp (a soul guide) in which he was also responsible for transporting souls of the dead to the underworld. This interdimensional travel is symbolic of the multidimensional flavour of the archetype.

Is Yoga Medicine?

May 21, 2008

Is Yoga Medicine? By Mary Frankos

Fifteen years ago, my esteemed Yoga teacher and mentor was questioned by a fellow student regarding the benefit of practicing Yoga. He half jokingly replied that Yoga is like “snake oil”, it’s good for whatever ails you. His reply was met with laughter by all; it was funny, all right, but it was also tantalizing, suggesting as it did limitless possibilities for the Yoga student.

In the years that followed, I have found that the practice of Yoga offers a mental and physical space in which to discover one’s previously unseen capabilities, as well as weaknesses. The various poses are demanding, challenging the student to develop strength and flexibility in parts of his body that have been weak and stiff for as long as he can remember. After my demonstrating a particular pose, many a student has responded, “My body doesn’t do that!.” My job as the teacher is to guide my students into that pose, encouraging them to attend to the new sensations they experience, as well as to observe their own reactions to the physical challenge. In this way, the student has many opportunities to know himself in a deeper way, even to see himself in a new light.

It is exactly this, this seeing oneself from a fresh perspective, which opens the door of healing and renewal. The adventure of the practice and study of yoga lies in its transformative power. I found this to be true for myself when I began my own exploration of Yoga, but over the past twelve years that I have been teaching Yoga, this truth has become more and more apparent to me As I have enjoyed this wonderful position of teacher, I have observed many students experience new truths about themselves. Sometimes these experiences have been primarily physical, I think about a current student who is 83 years-old. He now enjoys much freer movement in his shoulders, and is delighted by the degree of freedom he now has in his arms, neck and back. Perhaps even more often, as a class draws to a close, I see tension drain away from students’ faces, their eyes becoming clearer and brighter, their skin taking on a healthier glow. They often do look younger, less burdened by the difficulties of their everyday lives. What is it about Yoga that sets this endeavour apart from simple physical exercise?Uoga Faire-dancer

The simplest explanation is that hatha Yoga sits you down into the present. This present moment is the exact time and space; the only time and space in which you can fully live. As your body and mind meet in the concentration of doing a Yoga pose your experience clarity, focusing your attention, muscles, bones, and breath toward experiencing the particular pose. Again and again, as you approach each pose, this capability to meet each sensation with awareness increases. This experience of harmony of body and mind then transfers to your everyday life; you are more alert to the beauty and wonder of life that has always been right before your eyes and in fact, available to all your senses. This is the magic of Yoga.
